An Interview with Surya

"He breezed in as the charming boy next door in “Nerukku Ner”. And instantly the Tamil rasigars took notice of him. Then, for a couple of years, his films came and went without a trace. Until director Bala turned him into the memorable “Nanda”. Soon, as a smart cop in “Kaaka Kaaka”, he became a rage. And, believe it or not, Kaaka Kaaka is all set to be remade in Hollywood.
More recently, he played a conman in “Pithamagan” and slunk his way into the hallowed gallery of star performers. At once, the next door boy can be charmingly shy and disarmingly candid. And we catch up with him in one of his “Candid Moments”. He opens up passionately about his next film projects, his father and his brother, who has also entered the Tamil film industry.
For the first time, he plays a dual role in AVM Productions’ “Perazhagan”. Let’s first ask him about the double role."

Have you played double game in real life?

(He smiles and ponders) After all, I too passed out of college. I am student of Loyola (College). In my college days, I have played double role. Of course, for fun sake.
Which among the dual roles played by your father (veteran actor, Sivakumar) is your favourite?

He was simply stunning in “Pattikaattu Raja” as an innocent villager and an urban rowdy. As a boy, it was one of the films that amazed me.
Any advice from your father on playing dual role?

Of course, there is. But it is a professional secret and cannot be revealed.
(His eyes twinkle with a mischievous smile)

Jyothika also plays a dual role in the movie. Whose idea was it?

I swear it was not me (who gave the idea). It’s all director’s idea. Please, don’t get me into trouble.
Your next film?

Chennaiyil Mazhai Kaalam. I am teaming up with director Gowtham (of Kaaka Kaaka fame) again. This apart, I am discussing other story subjects as well.
Your younger brother has also entered the film industry?

Yes. Karthik (his younger brother” is now working as an assistant with Manirathnam). It was a very different experience when we worked together in Manirathnam’s “Ayudha Ezhuthu” (to be released this May).
